Philly Mick and the Glasgow Member-Guest

Ok, so if you follow golf you know that Phil Mickelson had the opportunity again today to become world number one. (Believe me when I tell ya that NO ONE on the earth wanted to see this happen more than myself.) With Tiger slumping there was no better time to take advantage of this feat. After an amazing round Thursday, and a solid one Friday, yesterday showed Phil and his short game guru-ness mode, in doing such he managed to save himself from a disastrous round. Last night I watched the replay of the telecast on Golf Channel, and let me tell ya I was super amped about the possibility of my man being world number one. And then today came...

(PAUSE....clears throat....) Ok, a little back story... go back to the Masters in April, Phil dominated the 3rd round with a flourish of eagles and birdies, enough to get himself in the final group on Sunday. That Sunday, April 11th (my birthday) my friends and I elected to play in a scramble with a huge payout (not, in fact 2 teams showed up to the thing, us included), and forgo watching the final round live. To my pleasure not watching Phil paid off for me in the end as Phil ended up with a 3 shot victory, and his 3rd green jacket.

...back to today, this coming weekend, August 14th & 15th is our hometown's country club's Member-Guest Tournament. (For the 3rd year I have had the honor of being my father in law's Guest, and we've managed to have done pretty well in this thing the past two years. 3rd place in '08 and T1 in '09.) So my pops-in-law called this morning wanting to play a practice round, so off we went, while in the back of my head remembering that I missed the final round of the Masters and things went my way.

We played pretty well, and although we left a lot out there I think we had a pretty strong round. I am super excited about this coming weekend, my game is not as sharp as his has been so I'm sure there will be a lot of practice in the next 5 days.

Anyway, during the round my buddy Chaunce is texting me letting me know my boy isn't doing so well. So after the round we venture into the dining room to eat some lunch, walking through the door on the 7 HD tv's I see it....Phil Mickelson +2 for the tournament....it took all I had not to unleash a string of words that would've made Andrew Dice Clay stare in disbelief. But being the Phil fanatic that I am, I watched every shot, albeit excruciating, I watched, and rooted, and cried inside, as true fans do.

So, Phil shot 78 today. He ended up in a tie for 46...that's only 42 spots lower than he needed to thump Tiger's earmark on #1. (UGH!) Next week is Kohler, WI and the PGA, and I am READY! Can't wait! Let me leave you by saying...GO PHIL GO!

Peace,
WB
